The 7th House in Astrology: What It Means and How to Find Yours

By Jack · Published August 29, 2026 · Updated October 11, 2026

The seventh house is traditionally associated with one-to-one partnership, including marriage, business agreements and open rivals. Its ruler and any occupying planets provide additional interpretive context. In Placidus it begins at the Descendant, opposite the Ascendant; Whole Sign begins it at 0° of the opposite sign. An empty seventh simply means the selected bodies do not occupy that house, not that partnership is missing from a life.

What the 7th House Actually Covers

A birth chart splits the sky at your birth into twelve houses, one per area of life. The 7th sits directly across the wheel from the 1st, the house of identity, of you on your own. The 1st is about you by yourself; the 7th is about what you look for, value, or project onto other people: a spouse or long-term partner, close one-on-one friendships, business partners and formal contracts, and, in older texts, open rivals, anyone you deal with face to face instead of at a distance.

The Descendant is one of four chart angles, alongside the Ascendant, Midheaven and Imum Coeli. Placidus uses it as the seventh cusp. Whole Sign distinguishes the angle’s calculated degree from the seventh house’s 0° boundary. Keep that distinction when comparing the tables or a planet near a cusp.

It's easy to mix the 7th house up with the 5th, which covers romance, dating, and the early spark of attraction. Think of the 5th as pursuit and enjoyment in the moment, and the 7th as the ongoing, formal bond a relationship can grow into over time. Plenty of charts pair a lively 5th with a quiet 7th, or the reverse. Neither pattern tells you whether someone ends up partnered.

How to Find Your 7th House

The fast way needs nothing but your Rising sign. Your 7th house sign sits directly across the wheel from it, always the same six-sign relationship: Aries rising puts Libra on the 7th, Cancer rising puts Capricorn there, and so on around the zodiac. That holds no matter which house system a calculator uses, because it's a statement about signs on a circle, not about how the twelve houses get drawn.

That table gets you the sign. It won't get you the exact degree your Descendant falls at, and it won't tell you which planets, if any, actually sit inside the house, for that you need your real birth time, date, and place run through an ephemeris. The tool below does that directly: enter your birth details once, and it shows your Descendant to the arcminute, your 7th house ruler, and every planet that lands in the house itself.

What does your 7th house look like?

The 7th house sits opposite your Rising sign — this tool shows its sign, its ruler in both the traditional and modern systems, and which planets (if any) fall inside it.

AM/PM

Once you know your 7th house sign, and ideally the exact degree from the calculator above, the next question is usually what actually sits inside it. Some charts hold one or more planets there, each layering its own theme on top of the sign itself. Plenty of others hold none at all, which is its own common, unremarkable pattern, covered further down this page.

What Your 7th House Sign Describes

The sign on your 7th house cusp colors what you look for in a close partnership; it's a style, not a prediction about the specific person you end up with.

  • Aries: You are drawn toward partners who lead with directness, people who say what they want and move first instead of waiting to be pursued.
  • Taurus: Comfort and follow-through matter more here than excitement, with partners who show up consistently and treat steadiness as a form of affection.
  • Gemini: Conversation carries real weight in this placement; partners who can talk through anything, who bring curiosity and quick thinking to a relationship, hold your attention.
  • Cancer: Emotional safety often becomes the baseline test for a partnership, with someone who can be nurturing, protective, and comfortable with real closeness.
  • Leo: Warmth and a bit of drama draw you in, partners who are generous, expressive, and unafraid to make a relationship feel important.
  • Virgo: Reliability and attentiveness often outweigh romance for its own sake, with partners who notice details and show care through practical support.
  • Libra: Balance sits at the center of this placement, quite literally, with partners who value fairness and give-and-take as much as you do.
  • Scorpio: Intensity tends to be the draw here, not the deterrent, with partners capable of real depth, privacy, and emotional honesty even when it is uncomfortable. See Scorpio in the 7th House for the full breakdown.
  • Sagittarius: Freedom within a partnership matters here, someone who brings honesty and enough independence that the relationship never feels confining.
  • Capricorn: Long-term thinking often shapes what feels attractive in this placement, with partners who take commitment seriously and build toward something over time. See Capricorn in the 7th House for the full breakdown.
  • Aquarius: Equality shapes this placement more than romance does at first, with partners who feel like a collaborator, an equal, before anything else.
  • Pisces: Compassion and imagination often define the pull here, partners who are sensitive, empathetic, and comfortable with a relationship that does not follow a fixed script. See Pisces in the 7th House for the full breakdown.

Planets in the 7th House

Any planet sitting inside the 7th adds its own layer. Venus in the 7th, you genuinely care about getting along. Not performing warmth, actually wanting it: the comfortable routine, the shared playlist, the partner you'd rather spend a quiet evening with than argue about the dishes. Friction drains you here more than it does in most charts. Venus in the 7th House: Love, Equality and the Inner Partner covers this placement in full, including the five-step reading and how it differs from Venus in the 8th.

Mars in the 7th, direct, sometimes blunt. If something's wrong between you, it gets said out loud, which means conflicts run hot but rarely fester. The energy can read as passion or competitiveness depending on the day and the rest of the chart. Mars in the 7th House: Drive, Conflict and the Manglik Question covers the 6° check, the fight-and-make-up loop, and how often a Western 7th-house Mars stays in the 7th of a Vedic chart.

Saturn in the 7th, slow to commit, serious once in. The internet will tell you this means late marriage. Maybe. Or it means you're choosy, and the relationship you eventually build has an unusual amount of structure holding it together. Saturn in the 7th House: What It Means for Commitment and Love covers this placement in full, including a self-check tool and an honest boundary on the marriage-age and spouse claims.

Moon in the 7th, you read the emotional weather of a partnership before you read anything else. Sasportas' worked example for this exact placement points toward seeking a partner who carries the Moon's own qualities: someone receptive, compassionate and caring. Moon in the 7th House: Feelings, Needs and the Other Person covers this placement in full, including the difference from Moon in the 8th.

Pluto in the 7th clusters by birth decade and rising sign, because Pluto spends more than a decade in each sign. Pluto in the 7th House: Love, Power and Who Actually Has It covers who has it, how to check whether yours is personal, and where intensity ends and control begins. A Sun in the 7th points to the time of day instead of the decade: under Placidus houses it marks a birth in the last stretch of daylight, and the Sun in the 7th house guide turns that into a window you can test against your birth time.

An Empty 7th House

Plenty of charts turn up with no planets in the 7th house at all, common enough that you can measure it directly instead of guessing. In a simulation of 20,000 birth charts run with Venusward's own Swiss Ephemeris code (2026-08-29), the 10-planet set (Sun through Pluto) came back with an empty 7th house 49.0% of the time under Placidus and 49.1% of the time under Whole Sign, close to a coin flip either way. Add two commonly used points, Chiron and the North Node, and that rate drops to roughly 41%, since more points scattered across the chart leave fewer houses completely empty. Across the same simulation, houses sat empty 5.7 times on average out of twelve, so an empty 7th is close to the typical case, not an outlier. The two house systems don't always agree on whether a given chart's 7th house counts as empty, either: switching between them flips that verdict in roughly 25.61% of the simulated charts, since a planet sitting near the boundary between two houses can land on either side depending on which system drew the line. See Empty 7th House Meaning for the full breakdown of what an empty 7th does and doesn't mean. Either way, the sign on the cusp and its ruler, covered next, still describe your general approach to partnership.

The Ruler of the 7th House

Every zodiac sign has a planet traditionally assigned to rule it. Whichever planet rules the sign on your 7th house cusp becomes your 7th house ruler, a Cancer 7th has the Moon as its ruler, a Capricorn 7th has Saturn, and so on through the same twelve pairings astrologers have used for centuries.

Two rulership systems exist side by side, and they agree on nine of the twelve signs. The traditional system, built before astronomers found the outer planets, assigns Mars to Scorpio, Saturn to Aquarius, and Jupiter to Pisces. The modern system swaps in Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune for those three, and leaves the other nine signs alone.

Naming the ruler is only step one. Where that ruling planet itself falls adds a second layer, a 7th house ruler tucked into your 2nd house of money and resources tells a different story than the same ruler sitting in your 10th house of career. The calculator above works out both pieces, in both rulership systems, from your own birth data.

Take a Cancer 7th house as an example: it doesn't just point to the Moon by name. Whatever house the Moon occupies in your specific chart becomes part of the story too, since it shows you where that ruling energy is actually spending its time. The same logic applies to any of the twelve pairings once you know both pieces.

Why It Looks Different on Different Apps

A house system decides where the twelve house lines fall, and different sites default to different ones. The most surprising entry belongs to Co-Star, which runs on neither of the two systems most people assume are the only options; its default is Porphyry, a much older system most users have never heard named.

Your Descendant sign itself never changes between Placidus and Whole Sign.

What can shift is which planets end up counted inside the 7th house, because the two systems draw the boundary at different points. A planet sitting a few degrees past your Descendant might land in the 7th under Whole Sign and the 8th under Placidus, or the reverse, without your Descendant sign moving at all. The tool above already runs both systems side by side against your own chart, so you can see directly whether that applies to you. House Systems Compared: Placidus, Whole Sign, and Porphyry works through one full chart under four different conventions if you want to see the same mechanism in more detail.

Near either pole, whole stretches of the calendar bring nonstop daylight or nonstop night, and Placidus simply has no mathematical answer for a chart born there, on any site doing the calculating. Venusward's calculator falls back to Whole Sign automatically when that happens, and says so right on the results page, instead of quietly handing back a number that was never really computed.

Don't confuse this with a separate cause: a Descendant or 7th house sign that looks different between a Western and a Vedic site isn't a house-system disagreement at all, it's a different zodiac in use. See how the sidereal zodiac shifts your sign in Vedic astrology for that separate mechanism.

Birth Time Matters Here

The Descendant moves about one degree every four minutes, the same rate as the Ascendant it sits opposite, which makes it one of the most time-sensitive points in the whole chart. If you were born close to a sign boundary, a birth time off by fifteen or twenty minutes can be enough to carry it into the neighboring sign, even though every planet's sign in the same chart stays exactly where it belongs. If the time is missing altogether, start with what you can still read from a chart with no recorded time.

Without a real birth time, you can't calculate the Descendant, the 7th house ruler, or which planets sit inside the house at all; a chart built on a guessed or unknown time has to skip them rather than show you a number that might be wrong. The honest move is to leave those fields blank instead of guessing. The tool higher up this page does exactly that when you mark your birth time as unknown: it builds a noon chart for everything that doesn't depend on an exact clock time and skips the rest. QUICK ANSWERS

Quick Answers

How do I figure out my 7th house?

Your 7th house sign sits directly opposite your Rising sign, six signs around the wheel. For the exact degree and which planets actually fall inside it, run your birth data through the calculator above.

How do I find my 7th house ruler?

Look at the sign on your 7th house cusp, then look up which planet traditionally rules that sign — that planet is your ruler. The calculator above works out both that ruler and where it falls in your chart, in traditional and modern rulership systems side by side.

Which planet is good in 7th house?

No single planet is automatically good here; astrology describes leanings, not guarantees. Venus there often brings warmth and a taste for harmony into partnerships, and Jupiter often brings generosity or opportunity through them.

Which planet should not be in the 7th house?

None of them rule out a good relationship. Mars or Saturn there can add friction or a slower road to commitment — worth noticing, not a verdict.
