Empty 7th House Meaning: What It Does and Doesn't Say About Love

By Jack · Published August 29, 2026 · Updated September 13, 2026

The 7th house is the department of one-to-one partnership. Sasportas' The Twelve Houses locates it as where a person first meets their own unclaimed qualities through a partner. Arroyo's house grid crosses it as Angular-Air, an active, socially oriented arena. An empty 7th only means no planet's degree fell there at birth, not an empty life.

Sampling limit: the 20,000-chart US run samples dates from 1940–2005 and gives ten selected cities equal weight. It does not reproduce the population distribution of births. Results describe this synthetic sample, not marriage rates or the probability for an individual person.

What "Empty" Means Here

Every birth chart has twelve houses. The 7th sits directly opposite the 1st, and it covers committed one-on-one relationships: marriage, business partners, anyone you deal with as an equal. See The 7th House in Astrology for what the house covers as a whole. A house counts as "empty" when no planet's calculated position falls between its starting cusp and the next house's cusp. That's a purely geometric outcome, decided by where the planets happened to be at your exact birth moment, not by anything about what the house means.

Empty doesn't mean blank. An empty room still has walls, a floor, and a door that faces a specific direction. Your 7th house works the same way. The sign on the cusp and its ruler still describe the room, even when nobody's sitting in it. That ruling planet is sitting somewhere else in your chart, and where it landed, which house, which sign, is what most astrologers read when the 7th itself has nothing in it.

How Common an Empty 7th House Is

To put a real number on that, we ran 20,000 randomly generated birth charts, dates spread from 1940 through 2005, placed across ten U.S. cities, through Venusward's own Swiss Ephemeris code on August 29, 2026, then checked how many came back with zero planets in the 7th house.

Planets countedPlacidus housesWhole Sign houses
10 (Sun through Pluto)49.02% (±0.69%)49.10% (±0.69%)
12 (+ Chiron, North Node)41.38% (±0.68%)40.81% (±0.68%)

Using the ten selected planets, the 7th house came back empty in about 49% of charts under either house system, close enough that your choice of system barely matters here. Add Chiron and the North Node to the count and the empty rate drops to roughly 41%: counting Chiron and a calculated point, the North Node, gives more chances for an entry to land in the 7th. Either way, an empty 7th house isn't unusual. It's closer to a coin flip than a rare configuration.

The same simulation averaged 5.72 empty houses per chart under Placidus, slightly fewer than half of the twelve houses. Here, the ten selected bodies are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The Sun and Moon are luminaries; this is not the traditional seven-planet set.

How often the 7th comes back empty also depends heavily on which sign sits on its cusp. Here's the breakdown by 7th house cusp sign, Placidus houses, ten selected planets, same 20,000-chart run:

7th house signP(empty 7th house)
Aries62.39%
Taurus56.47%
Gemini45.07%
Cancer35.61%
Leo25.81%
Virgo23.31%
Libra24.91%
Scorpio32.46%
Sagittarius53.98%
Capricorn62.30%
Aquarius60.43%
Pisces64.61%

Signs on one side of the wheel, Aries, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and Taurus, empty out more than 55% of the time in this sample. Signs on the other side, Leo, Virgo, and Libra, empty out closer to a quarter of the time. That split tracks which signs the visible planets are statistically more likely to occupy across a wide range of birth dates. It has nothing to do with those signs being unlucky for partnership.

Why the House System Can Flip the Answer

Switching between Placidus and Whole Sign houses never changes which sign or degree a planet sits at. See House Systems Compared for the full explanation of what does and doesn't move. What it can change is which house a planet near a boundary gets counted into, and the 7th house sits right on that kind of boundary.

Run the same 20,000 charts under both systems and compare them chart by chart: is the 7th house empty or not? In 12.77% of charts, it's empty under Placidus but holds a planet under Whole Sign. In another 12.84%, it's the reverse, empty under Whole Sign, occupied under Placidus. Add both directions together and the two systems disagree on the empty-or-not question in 25.61% of charts, roughly one in four. That disagreement comes down to how each system draws the cusp. Whole Sign starts a new house wherever a new zodiac sign starts, so a planet sitting at the last degree of a sign still counts as inside the previous house, right up until the sign changes. Placidus calculates the cusp at a specific degree that can fall in the middle of a sign, so that same planet can already belong to the next house over. If a planet sits near either boundary, it's the one most likely to flip which side of "empty" your 7th house lands on, depending on which system you're reading.

What to Read Instead

An empty 7th house still has a sign on its cusp, the Descendant, and that sign is worth reading on its own terms. See What Is My Descendant Sign? for what each sign at that position tends to look for in a partner.

The Descendant's sign also comes with a ruling planet. Where that planet sits elsewhere in your chart, its own sign, its own house, is the standard way astrologers read an empty house. Modern astrology gives three signs a second "modern" ruler on top of the traditional one:

Venus and Mars carry more of the load for how you approach attraction and desire than any single house does on its own. See Venus in Every Sign and Mars in Every Sign for what each sign contributes to that picture, whether or not your own 7th house happens to be empty.

Does It Mean No Marriage or Late Marriage?

Neither. Venusward doesn't predict marriage timing, and no house being empty or full changes that. Close to half of all charts in our sample land on an empty 7th house, so reading it as a marker for "no marriage" would mean writing off roughly half the population before looking at anything else about them.

Whether an empty 7th house affects marriage age is a natural question, but it isn't one this simulation, or any single birth chart, can answer. Marriage age depends on culture, circumstance, and personal choice far more than any one chart placement, and we aren't aware of a controlled study tying house occupancy to when someone marries. What a chart can describe instead is a relationship style: the sign on the Descendant, its ruler's placement, and Venus and Mars by sign.

The same caution applies to the question of which planet is "bad" in the 7th house. Traditional texts flag Mars or Saturn there as bringing more friction into partnerships than a softer placement like Venus would. That's interpretive tradition passed down through practice, not a measured outcome.

QUICK ANSWERS

Quick Answers

What if my 7th house is empty?

It means no planet's calculated position fell in that part of your chart, true for close to half our simulated charts — it says nothing about whether or when you'll partner up. Read your 7th house cusp sign, its ruler's placement, and your Venus and Mars signs instead.

Does an empty 7th house affect marriage age?

We don't have evidence that it does, and Venusward doesn't make marriage-timing predictions from a birth chart. Marriage age is shaped by circumstance, culture, and personal choice far more than any single house being occupied or empty.

Which planet is not good in 7th house?

None of them, in the sense of being flatly bad. Traditional astrology reads Mars or Saturn there as adding more friction to partnerships than Venus would — a texture to expect, not a verdict.

What do empty houses in a birth chart mean?

Mostly that a planet didn't land there at your exact birth time — a geometric outcome, not a comment on that area of life. In the same simulation, the average chart has about 5.7 empty houses under Placidus, so an empty house is closer to the rule than the exception.

Does empty 7th house mean no marriage?

No. Close to half the charts in our sample had an empty 7th house, so reading it as 'no marriage' would apply to roughly half the population — and Venusward doesn't predict relationship outcomes from a chart either way.

Why is an empty 7th house more common with some signs, like Aries or Pisces, than others, like Leo or Virgo?

In our simulation, the 7th came back empty over 60% of the time with Aries, Capricorn, Aquarius, or Pisces on the cusp, versus about a quarter for Leo, Virgo, or Libra. That gap tracks which signs the visible planets statistically favor, not any quality of the sign itself.
