What Is My Descendant Sign? Free Calculator and 12-Row Table
By Jack · Published August 29, 2026 · Updated October 20, 2026
Someone asked your rising sign and you said Sagittarius. That already answered a second question you didn't ask: your descendant is Gemini, the sign sitting directly opposite it on the wheel. That pairing holds for every chart, because the descendant is defined as the point 180° across the sky from the ascendant, wherever one lands, the other is exactly six signs away. Don't know your rising sign? The calculator right below works out your descendant sign from your birth date, time and place, down to the exact degree. If you do know it, the 12-row table further down gives you the sign with no calculation at all; only the degree needs an accurate birth time.
- Your rising sign → your descendant sign — always the opposite.
- The math — it's geometry: ASC + 180°.
- How fast it moves — about 1° every 4 minutes of birth time.
- Which tool to use — the calculator right below if you don't know your rising sign; the table if you do.
What does your 7th house look like?
The 7th house sits opposite your Rising sign — this tool shows its sign, its ruler in both the traditional and modern systems, and which planets (if any) fall inside it.

The 12-Row Table
Every rising sign pairs with exactly one descendant sign, and geometry decides the pairing, not anything specific to your chart. Find your rising sign in the left column below. Its descendant sign is the one sitting across from it on the right.
| Your Rising Sign | Your Descendant Sign |
|---|---|
| Aries | Libra |
| Taurus | Scorpio |
| Gemini | Sagittarius |
| Cancer | Capricorn |
| Leo | Aquarius |
| Virgo | Pisces |
| Libra | Aries |
| Scorpio | Taurus |
| Sagittarius | Gemini |
| Capricorn | Cancer |
| Aquarius | Leo |
| Pisces | Virgo |
Rising sign Sagittarius, from the example above? The table already gave you the answer: Gemini, no calculation needed. It works in reverse too; know your descendant sign, and your rising sign is just the row across from it.
Why It's Always the Opposite Sign
Picture the horizon at the moment you were born as one long line across the sky. The ascendant is where that line crosses the eastern edge; the descendant is where it crosses the western edge, the same line, opposite ends, 180° apart on the zodiac wheel. Add 180° to any zodiac position and it moves exactly six signs around a twelve-sign wheel, which is the same gap you see in each of the six pairs in the table above. That's the whole explanation: the descendant sign is always the sign directly opposite the rising sign because it comes straight out of the geometry of the horizon, not from anything layered on top of it.
Is the Descendant Always the 7th House Cusp?
Under quadrant-based house systems, Placidus, Koch, Porphyry, yes, by definition: the 7th house cusp is the descendant degree itself, the same way the 1st house cusp is the ascendant degree. Under Whole Sign, the seventh house is still whichever sign the descendant falls in, but its cusp sits at a fixed 0° of that sign instead of at the descendant's exact degree. In House Systems Compared: Placidus, Whole Sign, and Porphyry, one sample chart's ascendant sits at Pisces 05°29′: the 1st house starts right there under Placidus, but at Pisces 00°00′ under Whole Sign. That same 5°29′ gap shows up on the descendant side of the chart too. Either way, you land on the same descendant sign, only the exact degree marking the house boundary moves, and neither convention is more correct than the other.
A fair number of charts have no planets sitting in that same 7th house at all, which is its own ordinary pattern rather than a gap worth worrying about. See what an empty 7th house means for what that does and doesn't say about a chart.
What Your Descendant Sign Describes
Beyond the geometry, the descendant carries a meaning of its own: it points to the presence or approach you find appealing in a close one-on-one partner, separate from what the ascendant describes, how you come across to other people. Read these as tendencies, not fixed predictions about anyone's appearance or how a specific relationship turns out.
Descendant in Aries
A direct, plain-spoken approach reads as attractive here, more than anything cautious or hedged; friendly competition and fast decisions are what put energy into the partnership.
Descendant in Taurus
What steadies a descendant in Taurus is consistency, a partner who shows up the same way today as last month, without much drama in between. The partner who shows up with groceries instead of flowers is the one who scores points here. Physical comfort and reliability matter more than novelty ever does.
Descendant in Gemini
A long, curious conversation draws a descendant in Gemini in more than any grand gesture does. Partners who keep raising new ideas or questions hold this placement's attention longest.
Descendant in Cancer
Emotional safety matters most for a descendant in Cancer, a partner who notices a mood shift and responds to it, not just one who's simply present. Noticing you went quiet at dinner, then checking in about it later, does more here than any big declaration. Consistency of care, more than intensity, reads as closeness.
Descendant in Leo
Why does warmth read as attraction for a descendant in Leo? Generosity with attention and encouragement registers as a partner genuinely showing up, not performing for the room.
Descendant in Virgo
Grand romantic gestures rarely register the way a small, useful one does for a descendant in Virgo, fixing the leaky faucet beats writing a poem about it. A partner who notices a real problem and quietly handles it earns more trust than one who just talks about it. Follow-through beats flattery every time.
Descendant in Libra
Two people weighing a decision together, taking turns making the call, that's the dynamic a descendant in Libra gravitates toward. Fairness and follow-through in small day-to-day choices matter more here than either partner having the final say.
Descendant in Scorpio
Depth is the currency for a descendant in Scorpio, a partner willing to go past small talk, and stay there, earns more trust than one who keeps things light. Small talk doesn't count as talking here. Loyalty demonstrated over time matters more than loyalty stated up front.
Descendant in Sagittarius
Honesty, even blunt honesty, tends to land well with a descendant in Sagittarius, especially from a partner who also wants room to explore ideas or travel independently. Shared curiosity about the world often matters as much as romantic chemistry.
Descendant in Capricorn
Promises alone rarely land with a descendant in Capricorn, what builds trust is a partner who follows through under pressure, over months, not in one grand moment. Paying their share of the rent on time, every time, does more here than any single romantic gesture.
Descendant in Aquarius
Does friendship come before romance for a descendant in Aquarius? Often, yes, a partner who's independent-minded and comfortable with some distance feels more compatible than one who wants constant togetherness. Spending Friday night on separate hobbies, in the same house, counts as quality time here.
Descendant in Pisces
A quiet, attentive gesture matters more to a descendant in Pisces than any loud declaration, partners who pick up on unspoken feelings, and respond without being asked, feel like the right fit.
If You Want the Exact Degree
The table above hands you a sign, not a degree, and the degree is the part that moves fastest in a birth chart. The descendant moves in lockstep with the ascendant, crossing roughly one degree of the zodiac every four minutes on average. That rate isn't perfectly constant; it shifts with latitude and which sign happens to be rising.
Take one frozen example chart: born March 2, 1994 at 6:14 a.m. in Chicago, with a calculated rising sign of Pisces, descendant in Virgo. Nudge the birth time just 14 minutes earlier and the rising sign flips to Aquarius, taking the descendant to Leo with it. Nudge it 57 minutes later instead and rising becomes Aries, descendant Libra. Neither shift took a full hour, worth knowing if your own birth time is a rounded estimate rather than a hospital record.
Don't know your birth time to the minute, or just curious how sensitive your own chart is to that uncertainty? The tool at the top of this page runs your birth details through the same calculation and shows your descendant's exact degree, plus how much room for error your specific chart carries. With no birth time at all, the descendant drops out of the chart; here are the placements that hold up without a birth time.
Changing the time zone or birthplace can change the Ascendant and Descendant. Changing only the house system does not change those angles. It can change house boundaries: in Whole Sign, the seventh house begins at 0° of its sign, while the Descendant retains its calculated degree. Check why Rising signs differ if the angle itself has moved.
Descendant vs. Venus and Mars
Descendant, Venus, and Mars sit at different layers of a birth chart, and they answer different questions about relationships, even though people often reach for all three interchangeably. The descendant comes from the exact moment and place you were born; it's an angle, not a planet, and it describes the presence or approach you're drawn to in close one-on-one relationships generally. Venus is a planet's actual zodiac position, and it describes something narrower: how you express affection and what you personally enjoy in romance. Mars, another planet, describes desire and pursuit, how you go after what you want, romantically or otherwise.
They can contradict each other, and that's normal. A Scorpio descendant drawn to depth and privacy can share a chart with a Gemini Venus that flirts through conversation and variety, same person, two real impulses, no need to pick a winner. Venus in Every Sign: What It Means for How You Love and Mars in Every Sign: What It Means for Desire & Pursuit cover those two placements sign by sign.
A descendant sign is one of the easier placements to look up without running a full chart: once you know your rising sign precisely, the descendant follows directly from it. The exact degree is the part worth checking with the tool above, especially if your birth time is anything less than exact.
Quick Answers
Is your descendant always in your 7th house?
Yes, in every house system: the descendant anchors the 7th house, at the exact seventh cusp in quadrant systems such as Placidus, or within the seventh sign in Whole Sign, whose cusp is separately fixed at 0°. Only the precise degree marking that boundary differs, not which house the descendant belongs to.
What does your descendant sign tell you?
It points to the presence or approach you're drawn to in a close one-on-one relationship — different from your rising sign (how you come across) or your Sun sign (your core identity). It's a tendency, not a prediction about who fills that role or what they look like.
What is my descendant sign if my ascendant is Sagittarius?
Gemini. The descendant sign is the sign directly opposite the rising sign in every chart, and Sagittarius rising pairs with a Gemini descendant for that reason. The 12-row table above covers the other eleven pairs the same way.
What is the meaning of a descendant sign?
Traditionally, it describes the qualities and approach you're drawn to in a close partner or significant one-on-one relationship. The "What Your Descendant Sign Describes" section above breaks that meaning down sign by sign.
Is there a separate descendant sign calculator, or does a regular birth chart calculator cover it?
A standard birth chart calculator covers it already, since the descendant is calculated from the same birth data as the ascendant, just 180° across the chart. Venusward's free calculator includes it automatically alongside your other angles and house placements, so a separate tool isn't necessary.
The descendant is one piece of the 7th house. Run your own chart for the exact degree, ruler, and house placements alongside it.
