Why Is My Birth Chart Different on The Pattern? We Ran One Chart Both Ways

By Jack · Published November 1, 2026

The Pattern uses Whole Sign houses and Venusward's calculator uses Placidus, two systems that cut the sky into houses differently. We entered one made-up birth into both: every planet matched to the arcminute, and five of ten changed house. So why is my birth chart different on The Pattern? In this test, only the house numbers differed.

What Happened When We Ran One Birth on Both?

On November 1, 2026, we entered a made-up birth, November 19, 1997 at 7:50 p.m. in Chicago, into The Pattern's free web chart tool and into Venusward's production engine, the Swiss Ephemeris pipeline documented in Accuracy & Methodology. The Pattern labeled its chart with a UTC offset of minus six hours, which is Central Standard Time for that date, so both tools started from the same moment.

This birth was picked on purpose: before the test, we ran 18 candidate births through our engine and chose one where Venus and Mars change houses between the two systems. The simulation further down gives the real frequency.

Every planet landed on the same degree and minute. The Ascendant first came out two arcminutes apart, Cancer 18°46′ in our default run against 18°48′ on The Pattern. Rerun at downtown Chicago coordinates (41.8781° N, 87.6298° W), about 3.5 km from our default point, it matched to the minute, so the gap fits the two tools placing Chicago slightly differently. We did not see which coordinates The Pattern uses; the table shows the downtown run.

The houses are where the two charts part ways. The Pattern drew Venus and Mars inside its 7th house, and Venusward's default Placidus chart puts both in the 6th. Five planets changed house, and the other five sit in the same house under both systems:

Why Is My Birth Chart Different on The Pattern if the Planets Match?

Signs and houses come from two different motions. A planet's sign is its position along the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path through the year, so two tools using the same tropical ephemeris give the same sign and degree for the same moment. Houses divide the Earth's daily turn on its axis, which is why they hinge on your exact birth time and place.

Astrologers broadly agree that the horizon anchors the houses: the Ascendant opens the 1st and the Descendant, directly opposite, opens the 7th. How to divide the sky between them is where systems split. Quadrant systems cut it into four quarters that are seldom the same size, so their houses come out uneven; The Pattern's chart page says the same of Placidus. Whole Sign skips that step. Per The Pattern's help center, a 29° Libra Ascendant puts the 1st house at 0° Libra, and each later house is one full sign.

A planet that sits between the two starting lines gets two different house numbers. In the test chart the Ascendant is Cancer 18°48′. With Whole Sign houses, all of Capricorn becomes the 7th, so Venus at 14° and Mars at 8° are inside it. Under Placidus, the 7th begins at the Descendant, Capricorn 18°48′; Venus sits 4°47′ short of that line and Mars 10°36′ short, so both fall in the 6th. For a fuller side-by-side of the systems, see the house systems explainer.

Is It the House System, or Did Something Else Go Wrong?

Compare signs before houses. A house system changes which house a planet is counted in but leaves its sign and degree untouched, because both systems read the same longitude. Use this table to sort what you see:

What differsLikely causeWhat to check
Only house numbers; every sign and degree matchesHouse system (Whole Sign vs. Placidus)Switch the other chart to Whole Sign

Reddit shows both kinds of difference, house-only and sign-level. In a 2023 thread about The Pattern, the replies point to the house system, the table's first row. A later commenter in the same thread said their chart was off by a sign as well as a house, and a sign difference cannot come from the house system; that calls for checking the zodiac setting and the birth data first. The fourth row is explained in why your sign is different in Vedic astrology.

Don't rush to the one-hour fix. The Pattern's chart page suggests nudging your birth time an hour either way if something feels off, while its help center says the app already accounts for daylight saving time, and Venusward's engine applies historical daylight saving rules from the time-zone database too. A shifted hour is a large change: in Venusward's birth-time sensitivity research, the median chart needed only a 30-minute error, in the nearer direction, to change its rising sign. Change the time only if the birth record says something different. For the traps around clock changes, see the daylight saving guide.

How Often Does Whole Sign Put a Planet in a Different House?

In 96.4% of 20,000 simulated charts, at least one of the ten planets changed house when the chart was redrawn from Placidus to Whole Sign. Venusward generated those charts from random births between 1940 and 2005 across ten U.S. cities, using the same production functions as the calculator, and the average chart had about five planets move. Each planet on its own changed house a little over half the time; for Venus the figure was 52.5%.

The moves are small and mostly go one way. 94.5% of them were exactly one house, and in 89.0% the Whole Sign house number was one higher than the Placidus number. The test chart fits that pattern: all five of its planets moved one house later. For the relationship house specifically, the two systems held a different set of planets in the 7th in 48.7% of charts.

The Ascendant's degree mattered. When it sat in the first ten degrees of its sign, charts averaged about three planets changing house; between 10° and 20°, about five; past 20°, between seven and eight, with about nine in ten of those moves going one house later. A late Ascendant places the 1st- and 7th-house cusps deep inside their signs, so a wide stretch of each of those signs lands in a different house under the two systems. These are averages across the sample, not a forecast for one chart. For how often the two systems disagree on whether the 7th holds any planet at all, see the house system disagreement research note.

Which Chart Should I Read, Placidus or Whole Sign?

No house system has settled the question; past the horizon line, astrologers disagree about how to divide the rest. Readings that rest only on the Ascendant, the Descendant and planet signs hold on either site, since those are identical.

Some astrologers treat houses as fields that build and fade rather than sharp boxes, and count any planet within 6° of the Ascendant or Descendant, on either side, as a 1st- or 7th-house planet whichever house system drew the chart. In the test chart, Venus sits 4°47′ short of the Descendant, so a Placidus reader who uses that rule would still count it as a 7th-house planet. Mars, 10°36′ away, is the placement that genuinely depends on the system.

For a planet like that Mars, the two readings point to different parts of life. Read from the 6th, Mars belongs to the working day: routines, the job, and how you get along with co-workers. The same house can also point to falling for someone at work when Venus sits there. Read from the 7th, Mars speaks to the terms a committed partnership settles into.

The practical choice is consistency. Pick one system for your main reading, and use the other only to check the planets that move. Venusward's calculator has a Placidus and Whole Sign switch in the Calculation Transparency card of your results, the quickest way to see which of your placements depend on the system. Near the poles, where Placidus has no valid solution for part of the year, the calculator uses Whole Sign automatically. How Venusward approaches a chart beyond the calculation is set out on How We Read.

Is The Pattern App Accurate?

On positions, in this one test: yes. The Pattern's web chart tool matched Venusward's Swiss Ephemeris calculation to the arcminute for all ten planets, and the houses we could read off its chart, including Venus and Mars in the 7th, followed the Whole Sign rule its help center publishes. That shows the two tools agree on positions; it does not show which ephemeris The Pattern uses. The written interpretations, timing forecasts and subscription were outside what we measured.

This was one chart, chosen because Venus and Mars move, run through The Pattern's web tool on a single day; we did not test the mobile app. The 20,000-chart simulation draws its births from 1940 through 2005 and ten U.S. cities, and it compares Placidus with Whole Sign only, leaving out Koch, Porphyry and Equal houses. Its percentages describe that sample, not the odds for any one birthday.

What Should I Do When the Two Charts Disagree?

  1. Compare the signs and degrees of the Sun, Moon and Ascendant on both charts.
  2. If they match and only the houses differ, the likely cause is the house system. Run your birth data here and switch the calculator to Whole Sign to line it up with The Pattern.
  3. If a sign differs, check the zodiac setting, then the birth time, a.m./p.m. and birthplace.
  4. Pick one system for your main reading, and note which planets change house between the two.

In our test, the planets and signs matched, and Whole Sign houses alone changed the house numbers.

QUICK ANSWERS

Quick Answers

Why does my chart look so different on The Pattern? Is it a transit chart?

In our test it was a natal chart: every planet matched the birth moment to the arcminute. The difference came from the houses: The Pattern uses Whole Sign houses, while Venusward's calculator starts in Placidus, as astro.com did when we checked in August 2026.

Which birth chart is more accurate?

With the same birth time and place, both can be calculated correctly; they number the houses differently while placing the planets identically. A different sign or degree has two common causes: the birth data, or a sidereal (Vedic) zodiac that shifts every planet by about 24°. Check the zodiac setting, then the birth data.

Which astrology house system is best?

There is no agreed answer. As of August 2026, astro.com and Cafe Astrology defaulted to Placidus, and The Pattern and CHANI used Whole Sign.

Is The Pattern better than Co-Star?

We did not test Co-Star, and this article does not rank the two apps. As of August 2026, Co-Star's help center said it defaults to Porphyry houses, with Placidus and Whole Sign as options, while The Pattern uses Whole Sign, so the same birth can show different houses by default on the two apps.
